Audio Project: Cats & Rabbits

For this audio project, I choose to work in Audacity. To address the topic “dusk to dawn”, I chose to portray a dream like style (to me dreams dominate the night). In my experience, dreams usually incorporate everyday scenes, which overlap each other, and create a twist of chaotic images. Through my audio project, I tried to portray these images through sound.

Though chaotic, the audio piece has a fun and almost joyful attitude. The incorporated song from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, “In a World of my Own”, portrays this quality best. It is a song that references to Alice’s dream she names Wonderland. The lyrics for this song are about an imaginary world where reality is altered just as a dream does.

The juxtaposition of varying, obnoxious, and somewhat horrifying effects that I added into Alice’s soft, innocent sounding voice also supported a sense of playfulness in my piece. 

As well as a dream, I also wanted to portray what I dobefore I start to dream for the night. I incorporated an everyday soundscape of my family and I casually talking as we clean up the kitchen before we, head to our beds.

Video with Performance: Backseat Daydream

For this video project, I chose to portray a usual scene in my life: a daydream. For me, the best place to day dream is in the backseat of a car ridding on the highway. In the beginning of my video, I start off with me getting into the car, then the camera looks at me, while I look through the window. This is where I chose to start the music, to show the viewer my dream starts here. The next clip is my view looking out at the passing forest, and then the shot zooms into a chaotic bush, as a transition from reality to my dream. When the music ends, and the silence starts, I have finished my car ride, and the dream has ended. But, because my dream was so “topsy-turvy” the video ends with my scared/ confused expression as I leave the car.

Adding music to the video was a bit challenging. After I had matched the rhythm of the music to the clips, I still had not grasped the cutting effect. I wanted the beginning of the song to be at the start of the dream and vise-versa for the ending. I decided to cut the song in half, which gives an awkward switch, but now the ending is less “cut off”.

By the end of the project, I was a little disappointed that I hadn’t achieved the smooth movement of the music. But overall, I am very happy I created a project that I never thought I would ever do. Having read my camera’s manual from cover to cover, I am finally making use of it, and am excited to create many more movies!

Electronic Project: Hovercraft

For this electronic project, I chose to make a hovercraft. Originally, I had read it was simple to make, and I had all the necessary parts (except for the fan) in my electronic kit. At first, I tried to assemble the hovercraft with a weaker fan, and one 9 Volt battery. After an attempted lift off, I quickly learned I was going to need a more powerful fan, so I found a 12 Volt fan. With a higher amount of voltage, I needed another 9 Volt battery (18 V in total) which would support the fan and the lights. I was also going to need a stronger resistor to withstand the current for the lights.

By the end of the project, I was a little disappointed that it didn’t glide on its own. I do need to give it a little push, but I am very happy that I’ve actually made something with a function! In the future, I would love to expand on this hovercraft. Maybe, I will make a bigger one! But this time make an addition of two fans in the rear of the craft to give it direction and speed when it lifts off the ground. This project was only the beginning!
